Best College Advice for Parents

“We’re going to put a little fuel in your bus”

Each week College Scoops shares interesting articles we have read throughout the week pertaining to college admissions, college life, college visits, or tips and advice as it pertains to the college planning process. This week one commencement service generated a lot of publicity as it is a feel-good story about loan forgiveness at Morehouse College.

Robert F. Smith, a billionaire investor, finished his address to the Morehouse College Class of 2019 by stating “We’re going to put a little fuel in your bus”. He then shared that he and his family would pay off every senior's student loan debts! Stunned, it took several long seconds for the message to sink in but once it did, students erupted to celebrate a gift they never expected. This is one graduation no one will forget.

“What is more dangerous––to talk about ideas in the open, or to pretend they do not exist? If we cannot discuss controversial ideas here, where can we have an open-minded debate?” This is an interesting article about academic freedom of speech at UArts in Philadelphia.

Have you heard of the “disadvantage level”, a new metric introduced in the SAT? Read this perspective on the new “Adversity Score” of the SAT. Connie Betterton and David Coleman of the College Board share their thoughts on why this new metric was introduced.

Congratulations to all the college graduates and Happy Memorial Day weekend!
